I do believe in what Torrent Freak says:
“One of the main challenges that independent content producers face today is not piracy, but finding ways to to get their work noticed.”

Pioneer One is an ambitious project from Josh Bernhard and Bracey Smith who have collaborated before on ‘The Lionshare’, a BitTorrent-exclusive film which was released on VODO earlier this year. VODO is an online distribution platform which is able to reach millions of viewers through their relationships with existing BitTorrent communities.

Using a Kickstarter campaign to solicit the $6,000 budget for the pilot episode (over $7,000 was actually raised), the series will be further founded by donations from people that watch the pilot and are willing to donate money to see the series.

In the episode’s first day and a half online, about 84,000 downloads have occurred. and since the show’s premiere $1,000 a day has been donated to fund the next six installments.

In the pilot, what first looks like a terrorist act turns out to be a Cold War relic come back to haunt the present. We follow our main characters, a team of Homeland Security agents, as they discover the truth of what’s happened: a forgotten Soviet space mission has returned to Earth, and what it’s brought back will have implications for the entire world. It’s part political drama, part procedural drama, with a tinge of sci-fi. But beyond the initial catalyst, which is fiction, everything has its root in factual events.

download the pilot here http://www.pioneerone.tv/

The voyage of the HMS Beagle has been described as the most important journey ever made. During his travels, Charles Darwin gathered information and knowledge that would drastically change the way we look at the world. With his book “On the Origin of Species” (1859) Darwin would be the first to explain that life on earth is not created by God, but rather developed by evolution.

To celebrate Charles Darwin’s 200th birth year, and the 150th anniversary of his publication of “On the Origin of Species”, VPRO is running a 35-part series called Beagle: On the future of species. Life on earth is under continual change. Is there reason to worry about the future? Can science offer us sufficient answers to some of our most compelling questions? Are we leaving behind an inhabitable world for future generations?

Our VPRO-Beagle ship the Clipper Stad Amsterdam is an experiment in itself. This three mast sailing ship is rigged with advanced scientific measurement equipment. Scientists from various disciplines and from all over the world execute experiments on board this sailing science lab. The ship also has a built-in TV studio from which parts of the series are produced and broadcast.

Beagle takes viewers on a journey across magnificent landscapes, vulnerable regions, endangered areas and adventurous locations, stretching from Patagonia to the South Pacific, and from Australia to St. Helena. En route one recurrent question will be asked: “Will the earth survive mankind?”

Beagle has strong interactive components. All scientific findings made during the journey can be closely watched on VPRO’s Beagle website, and are broadcast by both radio and television; personal journals and video logs about life on board are made by the producers, the sailing crew, and by guests on board. These are updated on a daily basis. The route of the entire voyage can be closely followed by viewers on the internet.

The TV experiment has finished but youtube channel remains there http://www.youtube.com/vprobeagle

When an autist sees a sign where is written ‘ don’t step on the grass’ he or she wold understand it as ‘ do not step in all grass in the whole world at all times’. That is because they understand the message literally. We, “normal” people, would interpret the message and understand that as the sign is placed in a piece of grass inside a park the message is about the grass in the park. We, normal people, have the ability to understand context and to interpret. We have always been proud of it and all our culture is made of it. Of human fuzziness. The autist logic is also the computer logic. All data is understood literally.
When I read the news on the Guardian about the arrest of a man for making a joke about terrorism on Twitter, I asked myself about our understanding of ‘normality’. The very awkward (but not isolated) story shows how we are transforming ourselves in the ones that are unable to understand humor, irony, sarcasm and all the fuzziness in human life.
Last week Paul Chambers was due to fly from Doncaster’s Robin Hood airport to Ireland in the New Year, but heavy snow intervened. In frustration, he sent off a tweet to his friends. “Robin Hood airport is closed,” he wrote. “You’ve got a week and a bit to get your shit together, otherwise I’m blowing the airport sky high!!”. Because of this *hugely tasteless joke of questionable humour*, Chambers was arrested under the Terrorism Act 2000 and questioned for seven hours before being released on police bail. He has been suspended from work and his computer, iPhone and laptop have been confiscated and he has been banned from Robin Hood Airport for life.
File it alongside the Muslim schoolboy questioned after uploading a photo to Facebook of himself posing with a gun (he was playing paintball at the time);or the German airline passenger who was arrested recently for making a joke to security about the bomb in his underwear; or the unfortunate man recently cleared of an extreme pornography charge after prosecutors accepted that the animal involved in the bestial scene was actually a cartoon tiger, not a real one. Or the arrest of photographers taking pictures in public; or any of the hundreds more seemingly isolated recent instances of people being detained or arrested for activities that barely tickle the toes of criminality.

We are a paranoid, risk-averse society but we are not androids yet!
more on the Guardian

.

Everyone should have the right to disconnect. Seamless connectivity and rich social experience offered by web2.0 companies are the very antithesis of human freedom. Users are entrapped in a high resolution panoptic prison without walls, accessible from anywhere in the world. Everyone should have the right to quit her 2.0-ified life. Facebook and Co. are going to hold all your information and pictures on their servers forever! The makers of the 2.0 suicide machine still hope that by removing your contact details and friend connections your data is being cached out from their servers. This can happen after days, weeks, months or even years. Just deactivating the account is thus not enough!
Athttp://suicidemachine.org/ you can liberate your newbie friends with a Web2.0 suicide! This machine lets you delete all your energy sucking social-networking profiles, kill your fake virtual friends, and completely do away with your Web2.0 alterego.

WEB 2.0 Suicide Machine Promotion from moddr_ on Vimeo.

from their website:

What shall I do after I’ve killed myself with the web2.0 suicide machine?
Try calling some friends, talk a walk in a park or buy a bottle of wine and start enjoying your real life again. Some Social Suiciders reported that their life has improved by an approximate average of 25%. Don’t worry, if you feel empty right after you committed suicide. This is a normal reaction which will slowly fade away within the first 24-72 hours.

I know, I know, it this is old news, but still.. lovely way to deal with DRM, exactly what one would expect from those men. Like they say themselves “We’re letting you see absolutely everything for free. So there! But we want something in return. None of your driveling, mindless comments. Instead, we want you to click on the links, buy our movies & TV shows and soften our pain and disgust at being ripped off all these years.” And it seems to have worked! They did earn money giving their content free on youtube.

English
In 2007, Jo-Anne Green and Helen Thorington (Co-Directors, New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. | Turbulence.org) proposed Networked to Eduardo Navas (NewMediaFIX). Along with Sean Dockray (Telic Arts Exchange) and Anne Bray (Freewaves), they developed an application to the National Endowment for the Arts, which funded the project in 2008.

An international Call for Proposals was issued. It defined the project’s Goals and Objectives and invited contributions that critically and creatively rethink how networked art is categorized, analyzed, legitimized — and by whom — as norms of authority, trust, authenticity and legitimacy evolve. A committee of nine reviewed the submissions: four authors were commissioned to develop chapters that are now open for commentary, revision, and translation. A fifth — one of the runners-up — was invited to contribute. Networked is open to additional chapters. See Guidelines.

Networked proposes that a history or critique of interactive and/or participatory art must itself be interactive and/or participatory; that the technologies used to create a work suggest new forms a “text” might take.

We invite you to participate. You can comment on an entire chapter, but the CommentPress plugin also allows you to comment on individual paragraphs. You are also welcome to translate the chapters into other languages.

O comite internacional / The international commitee:

Steve Dietz (Northern Lights, MN)
Martha Gabriel (net artist, Brazil)
Geert Lovink (Institute for Network Cultures, The Netherlands)
Nick Montfort (Massachusetts Institute for Technology, MA)
Anne Bray (LA Freewaves, LA)
Sean Dockray (Telic Arts Exchange, LA)
Jo-Anne Green (NRPA, MA)
Eduardo Navas (newmediaFIX)
